Communication 20

to jacqueline

The footprints of a family man
left no trace in the city today
he neglected to say
“he wouldn't be home again and
we'd have to learn to live without him”

The tears of an honest woman
washed the streets in the city today,
I couldn't see her face through
the smoke and mortar,
her voice broke the silence
as she called for her daughter
"Jacqueline"

I heard one man’s voice fall silent
between the streets where the city lay,
maybe it was a voice of hope,
one man’s sacrifice towards the better day
but like many an onlooker
who chose not to hear,
I just turned and walked away

A photo of a family was found
on the streets of the city yesterday,
symbolic of a bond never broken
it was kept in a locket round the neck
- as a token
engraved in silver with italic lettering
the words simply read
" To Jacqueline "
